In today’s world, holistic healing has become more popular than ever before. People are slowly turning towards alternative therapies like massage, chiropractic, etc., to attain all-around health benefits rather than targeting a single ailment. With a growing number of people benefitting from holistic treatments, there is an enormous amount of real and fake information being circulated with regards to these therapies.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is one of the most popular therapies being discussed both online and offline among people. However, just like in the case of other holistic forms of treatments, there are several misconceptions about the HBOT treatment being circulated. This leads to treatment seekers feeling let down, upset and angry as they think the therapy is ineffective for treating certain types of diseases or illnesses which they were led to believe would help.

Unfortunately, in today’s world with the ease of information, there are many false pieces of information making rounds among people, misleading them into believing false details about the benefits of HBOT. This includes information like HBOT can cure cancer, which is completely false. Some of the other common illnesses and diseases that these so called-online sites promote HBOT for include diseases like diabetes, autism, Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, spinal cord injuries, etc.

According to the FDA, HBOT is not an established and recognized cure for many illnesses that these so-called websites and local businesses claim. Although some people can benefit from HBOT to a limited extent if they are suffering from these types of ailments, it does not necessarily mean or imply that they are a valid form of treatment for everyone.  Having said that, the FDA has enlisted 14 specific ailments for which HBOT can be an excellent form of treatment. These include:

  • Refractory Osteomyelitis
  • ISSHL (Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss)
  • Cyanide or Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
  • Gas Gangrene Myonecrosis and Clostridial Myositis
  • Exceptional Blood Loss
  • Other Acute Traumatic Ischemias (Compartment Syndrome, Crush Injuries)
  • Bony Necrosis or Soft Tissue Delayed Radiation Injuries
  • Intracranial Abscesses
  • Decompression (Diver’s) Sickness
  • Gas or Air Embolisms
  • Thermal Burns
  • Enhanced Healing for Select Types of Wounds (Arterial Ulcers, Venous Ulcers, Diabetic Wounds)
  • Necrotizing Soft Tissue (Subcutaneous, Fascia, Muscle) different kinds of Infections
  • Compromised Skin Flaps/Grafts

As mentioned earlier, HBOT may not be valid for any kinds of diseases and health conditions that have not been approved as an effective form of treatment even by the FDA. Although many people claim that their symptoms of diabetes, for instance, reduced considerably after HBOT, it is imperative to consider that the effect that HBOT can have on a patient’s health for certain types of diseases depends on their medical condition, age and overall health of the patient. That said, although HBOT may help to relieve symptoms or reduce illness, it should not be considered as a cure as the effects are incidental.
