Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used to treat a number of conditions. Specific issues that involve a lack of oxygen to skin tissues can benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy. In fact, the FDA has approved 14 conditions ranging from sports injuries to more severe conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness. HBOT is an easy, non-invasive treatment with 100% oxygen in the total body chamber to enhance the ability of white blood cells to eliminate bacteria, reduce inflammation and allow new blood vessels to produce rapidly.

Read on to discover how HBOT can treat CO poisoning and decompression sickness.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and how HBOT Treats It

CO poisoning occurs when one is exposed to the colourless, odourless gas carbon monoxide (CO). CO is found in combustion fumes and is caused by car exhaust, wood stoves or other fuel-burning products, fire smoke, and non-electric heaters. It has gained the name the “silent killer” and moves oxygen inside the bloodstream when CO mixes with the air we breathe. If fuel-burning products malfunction, CO will seep from it. CO poisoning happens often in the garage at home or other enclosed areas, such as a trailer or tent.

If one believes they have CO poisoning, it’s crucial for them to seek medical emergency immediately. The main symptoms include chest pain, nausea, dizziness, vomiting and migraines but if it is not treated, CO poisoning can lead to death. Hyperbaric therapy can actually reduce the likelihood of future brain injury or nerve damage and delivers more oxygen to the body.

Decompression Sickness and how HBOT Treats It

Decompression Sickness (DCS) is rare and often develops in people that work in extremely high or low altitudes, such as pilots, miners, mountain climbers or aviators. DCS can occur when nitrogen bubbles and other gases develop within the bloodstream. The bubbles can cause extremely dangerous risks to the body such as chronic joint pain in the knees, ankles and elbows. The warning signs to look out for include chest pain, skin rashes, malaise, headaches, ear and visual problems.

The hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber can be used to treat DCS. The chamber reduces the number of dangerous bubbles in the bloodstream and sends oxygen to the tissues, which ultimately works to reduce inflammation. A complete resolution of the DCS symptoms can be achieved in one or a few HBOT chamber treatments. The body’s cells are then able to repair themselves more rapidly as they are exposed to more oxygen.
